This is what your finished product can look like!
Darling of course, and the perfect gift for those grandma’s and grandpa’s, or even yourself!
Mod Podge Photo Tutorial:
Part I
You can also look back to Sassy’s mod podge tutorial for the original instructions.
What you will need:
Pre-stretched canvas
Paper cutter
or scissors
Cute paper pre-cut to fit the sides of your canvas
Cute photo’s
Two (2) – Paint Brushes or Sponge Brushes
Wax Paper
towel
Step 2: Have your strips ready? If not, cut them to fit on each canvas side while the Mod Podge is drying. My strips were 1/8 of a inch smaller that my measured sides.
Once Mod Podge is Dry, you will re-paint an additional thin layer on one side of your canvas.
I wanted to make sure that my edges would stick, and stick well. So you have an optional step of applying a thin layer of Mod Podge to each strip.
Step 3: Place your strip of paper along the edge of your canvas. Smooth it over with your fingers several times making sure no bubbles form. Repeat step 3 with all sides.
Your edges don’t have to meet up exactly.
You can cover the exposed canvas with paint in a few more steps.
If you didn’t already tear off a large piece of wax paper, DO IT NOW! Good job.
I also pre-cut my photo 1/8 inch on each size so that there was no edge overlap.
Place the photo down onto wax paper and apply a good amount of mod podge to the back of your photo. The photo paper is thick enough that it won’t pucker or bubble at all.
Step 5: Turn the photo over and smooth it onto your canvas.
You can cover the image with a soft towel to do the smoothing. It is easier to smooth a photo onto the canvas with something on top to keep front jerky movements.
Wait about 20 minutes for Mod Podge to dry.

Step 6: Mod Podge the front of the photo. It will look milky white, but remember it dries clear.
It will take about 20 minutes again for Mod Podge to dry.
Step 7: Dry Brush (or sponge) Paint Application.
You can use any dry brush or sponge. Make sure the brush or sponge is DRY to get that vintage look. Before you start to apply, wipe your sponge/brush on a paper plate or paper towel so you use a minimal amount. Then dab your sponge/brush along the edge repeatedly until it is as dark as you want.
Voila!
What you will need:
Mod Podged Photo’s on Canvas
Step 1: Put your canvases in order the way you want them to look on your wall. Also, decide how far apart you want them to be {1 inch, 2 inches…etc}. Multiply that number by 4. Measure your ribbon out to that length. Cut as many as you need for holding up canvases below. For three Canvases you will need four ribbons in this length.

Step 2: Get your ribbon ready to staple.
I like to fold my ribbon with about 1 inch overlap. The double strand will give the ribbon more strength when holding up another photo canvas below.

Step 3: Staple your ribbon to your canvas.
I stapled my ribbon 1 inch in from the edge of my canvas.
I used two Staples on top and on bottom for additional strength. Repeat as needed.
Step 4: The Top
I unraveled my ribbon first to “eyeball” how long I wanted it to be.
Then I cut double that length again for extra strength. Hey, that rhymes!
Stretch your ribbon flat, and then fold it over the the other side.
Again, I wanted my ribbon 1 inch from the edge.
Step 5: Staple your ribbon.
I used two staples on each side because I am paranoid.
Now you can hang your finished product! All you need is one cute hook or nail!
Who will you be giving your photo canvas prints gift to?
Cheers,
This beyond cool post comes to us from the amazing blog “Sassy Pepper!” I adore the name of this blog and the content! Be sure to jump on over and check out all that Sassy Pepper has to offer!

This is great!! I have so wanted some canvas photos, but they are so expensive–this is perect!
Question, though. (and this is such a stupid question, so I am sorry!!!)–ok, is the wax paper just to put the photo facedown on so you can podge it on the back? You're not affixing the photo to the wax paper, right?
Forgive me if my critical reading skills are lacking…
If you click on the other link for the original post. The wax paper is to help prevent air bubbles/pockets. It isn’t meant to wrap around the canvas.
Oh wow! Love love this!
Jo-Anna
I love that. I had seen a week ago where someone else had done that with one canvas. I have three kids and thought about doing just what you did! It looks great. Now, I just wish I had mine done.
Thanks for sharing

Sooo So excited to be on BCD Becca! Thank you very much for the post. I know all of my readers love BCD just as much as I do!
That is beautiful! O wow, I just love the way it turned out! I have used mod poge for all kinds of things but this is just prefect for my living room! thanks for the great idea!
I have three of the same size canvas pieces sitting at home! omg! I am so excited to try this!!!!!!
Do you think it will effect the outcome if two of the canvases are painted a pale lime green? should I paint over it? or leave it?
any tips? my email is: PEASandCRAYONS@gmail.com
Thank you!!!!
xoxo

LOVE this! Great job.
I love your blog! I am a new follower, I would love for you to follow me back.
Love the black and white! This summer I bought some printed canvases from $1 tree, spray painted the sides black and modge podged the photos on. Wish I had known not to use glossy the first time around! Love the way you attached all three together.
How pretty! I like that they don't look like frames; you know it's a custom made treasure!
This is SO gorgeous! I will be doing this! Thank you for the inspiration!
Looks good. Glad to see so many people love your canvas idea. Told you it was great! I still want you to help me do this on larger size canvas for my bedroom.
OMGosh….i LOVE this! I bet that even i, the craft-challenged, can do this! Thank you for the tutorial~
Yeah! I also do not understand what to do with the wax paper! I can't wait to try it out. I know just the picture…
If you read the other link, the wax paper is to help with air bubbles/pockets. It isn’t meant to be wrapped around the canvas.
Hi… that was great stuff.. I really like reading on this subject Could you tell me more on that… I love to explore.
Wow, I love the way these came out. The way you hung the three canvases together is a really great look! Thanks for the great how-to, I'll be linking.
I've put together a round up of cool photo displays on Craft Gossip today and included your project.
You can see it here

Help! I love this and am planning to do it tomorrow. But I don’t get the “Dry Sponge Paint Application” step. Are you dipping the dry sponge in the mod podge and coating it again? Or is this some other type of paint? Sorry if I’m just not getting it…
Kathy
I’d like to echo kathy’s question.
I am not quite sure either on what the wax paper was for. I’m also assuming only while the backs of photos were modge podged. And also can you explain the ‘dry Sponging’ bit for me too. Love how the photo canvas looks.
I love this idea! What did you use the wax paper for? I tried this using a matte photo and a matte acrylic but it came out very dull. Does anyone know if using a glossy photo would help bring out colors more?
What a great idea I can not wait to try this!!!!! Thank you for sharing:)
I LOVE THIS!
I want to do this as Christmas Gifts!
this is spectacular. really want to try this, but i am not quite understanding the paint and the dry sponge. what kind of paint? are you just making the edges of the piece appear slightly aged? would it be better or worse to paint the edges before one begins any of the other steps?
sorry for the flurry of questions, but i normally don’t attemt fantastic projects such as this and i want to not screw it up! thanks so much for this step by step.
Can you do this with posters as well?
These look fantastic!
I would also like to know what the wax paper and dry sponging is. The photos look spectacular!
I would also like to know what the wax paper is for and what the dry sponging is.
I did this last night but I must have done something wrong. My photos affixed to the canvas beautifully but once ModPodge was applied on top, they bubbled up and look horrible
I am so dissapointed. Do you have any ideas what might have gone wrong?
Mine are all bubbled up too – trying to see if letting them dry will bring the bubbles down. Super sad.
Please explain the dry brushing/painting! I would love to try this but I do not understand this part.
I made two however there’s some differences but it looks great. Thanks for the tutorial!
I have the same question as Kathy:”. But I don’t get the “Dry Sponge Paint Application” step. Are you dipping the dry sponge in the mod podge and coating it again? Or is this some other type of paint? “
You’re dipping the sponge in different paint. I use black acrylic paint. Hope that helps! And for those that asked about the wax paper… The wax paper isn’t applied to the canvas at all. It’s to keep the modge podge from getting everywhere, because it’s a pain to get off of stuff. So, the wax paper is used for laying the picture and stuff on to put the modge podge on. Hope that helps the confusion some!!
My guess for the wax paper is just to keep the modge podge from getting all over the place when you are coating the back of the photo…..From the pic it looked like she just dabbed the edges with the nearly dried paint to cover the edges and age the pic…..just my guess tho. Like this project too, think even I could make this. Thanks
That is such a great photo idea! I added a link to your page and one of your photos because it is such an awesome project. : )..
Hey there! Just letting you know that I linked to your post. I know it’s old news to you, but too good not to pass on to more readers! Found you through Pinterest. I’ll post in the morning if you’d like to stop by and take a peek. Thanks!
I absolutely LOVE this idea!! I can’t wait to do this!! I have had precious pics sitting on my CD’s for too long!! Thanks for posting!
I love this! SO creative!! would make awesome gift ideas! thanks for sharing!!
Holy crap this is genuis!!! I am so excited to make these =D thank you so much for the great easy to do instructions and pictures! Love it =D
Love this! One question – what type of paper did you have the photos printed on for this project? Thanks!
What is the best type of photo paper to use when doing this?
curious as to what type of photo paper as well. matte or glossy? print at home or through your local cvs/walgreens etc?
The pictures are printed on normal photo paper, on matte. Had mine printed at Costco on 8×8, using 8×8 canvas. I’m almost done mine! Super cute!
This looks amazing!! I can’t wait to try it myself!!
Can’t wait to try this. What sizes are the photos and canvases you used? Thanks!
OMG i just found you via Pinterest! This is a great Christmas gift!! Thanks!
I tried to do this last night & the mod podge smeared my photo. Do you have any idea what I did wrong? I am trying to make this as a Christmas Gift and I was very excited about it. Very disappointed I didn’t do something right. Thanks!!!
Does the wax paper go on top of the photo or under the photo
I can’t figure that out from the directions either….
I am curious if it does ruin the photo. Is there a certain way you should order the print?
Like Emily in Comment 31, everything was going great until I put the ModPodge on top. It bubbled up terribly.
I’m so sad because I was loving it! Do you know what I’m doing wrong? Does it maybe need to dry a little longer before putting the ModPodge on top?
Are these printed photos? Or can you use photos printed on regular paper?
A few questions…… First of all, what type of paper do you print the picture? Photo paper? Or regular paper? Also, when you put the picture on the canvas do you put it bcd side down? Thanks for any help.
LOVE this! Why do you do a first coat of mod podge?
I accidently bought Gloss Modge Podge, will it still work or look good?? Help! -Thanks
Shaleen, I used gloss mod podge and it turned out really wonderful! I think the difference is the glare from light. Matte doesn’t give off as much glare as the Glossy does. I still love them and will continue to use the gloss until I run out! ENJOY doing your project! I did!
I made one of these photo on canvas projects last week. Thanks to your step by step directions, it came out beautiful. It was very simple to do but had a lot of impact. It was a gift and the recipient loved it. THANKS!
Did you use pictures printed on photo paper or on printer paper? I really want to do this for one of my friends.
USE PHOTO PAPER!!! If you print your pic on regular paper, you’ll likely get bubbles and your pic will smear (unless you used a laser printer)!
I did this for Christmas presents and it turned out great! I had the photos printed on photo paper through a printer (like shutterfly). Also, I think it’s really important to let each layer of mod podge dry before adding anymore on top (maybe that’s the reason for the bubbling some have had?). Only thing I would do different is to paint the edges of the canvas before starting and then do everything the same. There are a couple of spots that my dry sponge painting couldn’t get to so I had to use a tiny paint brush.
I cannot tell you ENOUGH how excited I am about this project!!! I did it last night and LOVED doing it as well as the outcome! I used glossy mod podge because that is all I had but it turned out really well. I would like to warn everyone not to panic when you see some bubbles appear as it dries once you have completed the steps. I was sooo disappointed last night when I was done and saw bubbles. I woke up this morning and felt like a kid finding presents under their tree when I glanced at it!!! THE PICTURES WERE FLAT AND BEAUTIFUL! No bubbles! I will be using this project with many different size canvases and can’t thank you enough! Happy New Year to you ALL!
I would love to do this project. I would like to have the pictures in color though. What would I do differently as far as painting the sides of the canvas to age it? Do I want my photos to be glossy or matte finish? Are they printed on regular photo paper? Thanks!
I’m wondering if the texture of the canvas shows through the mod podge? It would certainly be a nice toouch. If not, perhaps brushing the mod podge on with a stiff brush in a cross hatch motion would add some texture? Either way, I can’t wait to try it. I just made a supply list so that I can run out to the craft store as soon as they open. Thank you for the great idea
I just did this project tonight. I printed my photos at home. When I went to cover them in the podge they started to turn pink. I quickly ripped that ruined photo off and placed another one on. No harm it looks just fine without the podge on top. I am going to make one for my mom next month and I’m going to order my prints and see if that makes a difference in the bleeding of color when you apply the podge to the top of the photo.
thank you so much this is exaclty what i was looking for, awesome!
I did this project for V-day but its been about an hour of drying and it looks kind of streaky? Anyone else experience this? Also I used the homemade mod podge (half glue and half water). It was the elmers glue-all.
This is so awesome!! I am so into re-using/recycling etc., and am an avid thrifter. I see so many canvas paintings etc. at garage sales…would it work to use a painted canvas if it is smooth and not textured? Would be so awesome to use some of these and they are usually so inexpensive…..
