Studio 5 Ruffled Headband Segment

Hi friends! I was on Studio 5 this last Wednesday here in Salt Lake City! It was a total blast and surprisingly easy…in the sense that I wasn’t a stress case like last time and everything seemed to fall into place quite well! Even with two days notice I’m thrilled with how it all turned out! Thanks mom for taking the girls!

I’ve been getting so many emails asking questions. I thought I’d address many of them here! The segment didn’t allow for me to talk about every little detail so here you go!

Q: Wait? Where do you buy your Broaches?
A: DownEast Clearance Center comes through again!!! All the beautiful broaches I had in the segment were bought for $1.99 at DownEast Clearance Center! They were Ann Taylor and JCrew Accessories. It’s not the regular DownEast but the Clearnace Center in Salt Lake. This location specializes in DownEast Cloths and accessories.

I’ve talked about another DownEast Clearance Center that I LOVE too. This location is the one I adore for all my Pottery Barn finds. Sheets, towels, furniture, rugs, clothing and other Clothing lines like DownEast, JCrew, American Eagle and other designers! Everything is scratch & dent or Monogrammed or slightly off but it’s incredibly usable still and well worth the trip!

Q: What size ribbon was I working with?
A: The Brown Ribbon was 1.5″ thick. It’s my favorite size to use when making a headband for an adult! I use 5/8th” ribbon for the ones I make for my girls! I also made a few with Silk and Satin Ribbon and Lace! Basically anything goes!

Q: Can I make this without a sewing machine?
A: YES!! You can also fold a pleat and glue it down with hot glue to get the same look but you won’t be able to pin a broach through! the glue is just too thick!

Q: What is that Organizer Called? I can’t find it on the IKEA Website!
A: Sadly IKEA doesn’t sell every single item that they sell in their store on line! Because it’s an accessory and a smaller item it’s not online. I’m not even sure what it’s called! But its initial intention is to organize belts and scarves and is on display in the bedroom department. Sorry I’m not much help!

Q: Did you make your Ribbon holder?
A: Yes I did! I have a post about it found HERE!!!!

Q: Where did you get your Outfit? (seriously someone asked this!!)
A: TARGET!!!! Who knew Target had such great clothing for moms!!! I haven’t shopped for cloths for me there in years! But there are some awesome finds! The Blue Ruffled top was a tank top and only $20 and the Gray Sweater thing was also $20 and comes in a ton of other colors. It’s long and drapie in the front. My husband hates it! He said he won’t go out in public with me if I wear it! WHATEVER MIKE! Mr. Fashion Expert himself! The turquoise ring is also from Target!

Q: Does your little girl really sleep in a headband?
A: Funny but yes! That wasn’t just comical banter! Blue sleeps in a headband as often as she can. That morning I had packed up every headband in the house and she about had a nervous breakdown without one. So I dug out of my bag the ugliest one to put her at ease! Seriously folks!!!She has a borderline unhealthy relationship with accessories! Should I be worried? It’s sort of her thing…Skirt with pants! Two shirts and a sweater and a headband to round out the look! Melts my hear I tell ya! She’s got “Punky Power!!!”

ok…that about sums up the Q and A! Thanks for the support people! It’s been exciting sharing this stage of the journey with ya! Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Thanks Studio 5 for an awesome day! Brooke, Darren and the entire staff were beyond helpful and made the process so comfortable and fun!! I Can’t wait to do it again!

Hoo? Hoo? Hoo wants to Applique?

This ones for all you readers who say “I’M NOT CRAFTY!!!” You know who you are! You think it takes some genetic jack pot or a magic Genie granting you a wish to turn you into a crafting Goddess! Don’t tell anyone but being creative isn’t all that difficult! Especially when there are amazing tools out there to use to get the job done with little effort or skill really!

Take for example this Applique Onsie I threw together… Holy Cute Owl Batman! All I did was buy a fat quarter of fabric, iron on some heat ‘n bond, cut it out, iron it on a onsie and zig zag stitched around it!

Ok…so maybe I did add some Ric Rac and fabric leaves but come on people!!!! If ever you’ve wanted to dive in and get your feet wet in the crafting world this is how to do it!

Take full advantage of the amazing Designer Fabric that is beyond beautiful and vibrant! If you can find a print you love that has an isolated image all the better!

Here are a few tips I have for Fabric Applique…

  • Be sure to buy the sewable Heat ‘n Bond! If you don’t your needle may get stuck in the thicker bonding and trust me! It’s not fun!
  • When you cut out your image don’t cut directly on its outline. Allow for a small space that will accommodate your stitching without interrupting your image!
  • You must use a stabilizing fabric for the inside of your shirts. Without it you’re screwed! Onsies and thin cotton will gather and not sew. You need something stronger on the back to help it glide threw your machine! Again…don’t ask me how I know!
  • Layering appliques looks incredible too! Don’t be limited to just one idea…play around with your images by stacking, layering and playing with a design before you iron them on!

Flowers, Birds, Trees, Shapes and other images lend themselves so well to Applique! Next time you need a project idea browse the aisles of your favorite fabric store and keep your eyes peeled for prints that you can picture on a tee shirt or onsie!

So no more excuses my friends! If you can iron you can applique!

Wire Ribbon Rosette

Bunco comes but only once a month! It’s one of those things that I look forward to more then you’d believe! An entire night where I trade in my kids for other fabulous girls! Food, catching up and even a few rounds of Bunco…if we’re not to caught up in catching up!

We just started rotating in a Craft night into the mix and this last months get together was awesome! Of Course I came camera in hand! Free Post right!!!

Courtney came up with the perfect project for a room fun of girls! These Wire Ribbon Rosettes are super simple and quick to make!

Here’s the simple 411 on how to create a few of your own!

Take approximately 20″ of two colors of Wired Ribbon. Ribbon should be at least 1.5″ wide. Start gathering the ribbon on one of it’s edges by pulling the ribbon to the center. Pull from each end until it looks ruffled! Do this to both pieces of colored ribbon!

Next you’ll form your flower by rolling each ruffled ribbon until it looks like the photo above. You can use the extra wire to stitch it together or you can use a little hot glue to make sure it’s secure!

Lastly you’ll stack your two colors of ribbon and glue them together. Add either an Alligator clip for a hair flower or a pin for a broach!

This one has added Peacock feathers.

The skys the limit when it comes to color combos!

These adorable ones were made the same exact way but we gathered the ribbon on both sides as opposed to just the one!

Once you are done gathering both sides you’ll want to fold the ribbon in half so each wired edge is touching.

Tie a knot on one end. This will be the center of our flower and we will roll the rest around it!

Create your flower by rolling the rest of the ribbon around the center. Secure it by using hot glue every inch or so. Add your pin or Clip or glue it on Felt to cut out and them glue onto a Headband!

Thanks Courtney for a fab projects! LOVE THIS!!!!!

Photoshop Actions

It’s been a while since I’ve shared any Photoshop How To’s! I recently shot some engagement photos for the cutest couple and it reminded me I needed to get my Photoshop butt in gear and share some nuggets of knowledge with all of you!

Photoshop can be a foreign land for even the best of us! I am far from a pro but have learned a few tricks along the way that are worth passing on to all of you!

When it comes to getting fun color effects in Photoshop it’s important to know that a great photo to begin with is key! It helps to have good lighting, proper subject placement and a cute people in the photo always seems to help too! I’ll show you a few actions that I applied to the same photo so you can see the difference! By the way…an”Action” is a pre made set of adjustments that have been compiled into one click of a button. You can find a huge collection of Free up-loadable actions on line! I’ll add links at the end of this post! Watch how they can totally change each photo…

Original Photo

Cropped and using the “Boost” and “Quick burn edge” actions.
Notice the richer colors and slight effect on the corners and edges.

And this one I’ve used an action called “Seventies”

And here is an example of how you can play within an action. By simply going backwards a few steps with in the “Seventies’ action, I decided I liked this bluer look. Becasue the actions are a compilation of layers and steps you can go back and take layer by layer off until you see what you like! It’s all a simple click of the mouse. Click your “Edit” tab in the upper left hand corner and click “step back.” Continue clicking until you find a look you like.

And lastly I love Pioneer Womans “PW Black and White” action. It has a built in burnt edge effect!

There are endless possibilities. With in each action you can adjust how much of it is applied! You can easily change the tone, depth, color and effects all by playing with the fill level and opacity!

I’ve up-loaded most of my actions from two sites…

Pioneer Woman and Coffee Shop

Search their sites for free down loads and tips along with great examples! Happy Photo editing!

p.s. I’m always asked what camera I shot with! I shoot with a Sony Alpha 200 and use a 50mm lens. The lens makes all the difference! Not sure how I got along without it!!!!

p.s.s I’d love to hear what other photoshop topics you’d like me to cover! I know what I like to do in PS but I’d love to hear what you guys would like me to cover! Let me know and I’ll try my best to cover it!

AHHH! Quick! Click the play button on this scary video! Could there have been a worse clip to have it freeze on! Holy Exorcist!

Click it already!!!!! AHHHHH!

So yeah…That’s my news appearance that aired last week! I really debated on posting it especially when I saw the “eyes rolled back in the back of my head” freeze frame! For reals You Tube!?! REALLY!!!! I know I don’t embarrass easily but this is just cruel and unusual!

Regardless, it was quite the adventure to get ready to tape this. I wish you could have been a fly on the wall of my house the night before!

First of all I thought I’d have two weeks or so to get ready but then I got the call saying they’d be here AT MY HOUSE at 7:30 am in two days! GULP!

I went into crazy mood right then and there! My hair! My ROOTS ! My kids need full training on how to act or I at least needed to come up with a effective threat that would scare them into submission!! What to wear! What to wear!

I frantically went on a mad hunt to find a salon that could squeeze me in with absolutely no notice! The gods must have heard my frantic plea because Robert Moody at Ulta in Sandy worked his magic on my locks the very next day! If you’re on the hunt for a fab new stylist give him a call! Oh…but not before emailing me! I have a referral card you can use for $20 off your first service! HELLO!!!! Fun stuff! He’s located in the Ulta Store across from the South Town Mall! Love Ulta! Love Robert!

So now that the hair drama was out of the way I had to clean the Casa top to bottom! Now I realize they probably weren’t going to go into my laundry room but yes it was on the list to tackle! So for two days I cleaned, freaked out, tried to keep my kids from undoing all that I just did and kept thinking I had the perfect outfit in mind so the wardrobe issue wasn’t even an issue….that was until I talked to my sister at 7pm the night before. She flat out told me “You can’t wear that!” WHAT!!!!! Yellow sweaters don’t look good late January! Now what! Here’s where I went borderline Schizophrenic! I had internal dialogs with myself that would have made the best doctors scratch their heads! It was a battle between the two little imaginary Angel and Devil sitting pierced on my shoulders! I played “fashion Show at lunch” at 10:30 at night and my poor hubs had no other choice but to compliment every single outfit I put on! If he hadn’t I’m sure I would have magically turned into a puddle on the closet floor twitching in misery surrounded by perfectly good options! And throughout all of this I kept telling myself:

“No One Cares Becca!!!!! No one cares what you wear! No one cares that you just got your hair done! No one Cares about the segment anyway! No one freakin cares! Chill out!”

So I settled on my very planned casual look that said “No one cares!” I forwent the curly hair becasue really? What mother of three has perfectly curled hair at 7:30 a.m. and I gave into the fact that I’ll probably be a 20 second blip in a segment! Totally giving in to the reality of it all surprisingly put me at ease! Almost to the point where I look way boring and dull! I’m a lot more spaztic in real life!

So weeks past and the air date finally came! I of course was anxious an questioned the outcome worried it was going to be social suicide! But I watch and was pleased with the lack of mortification! And again reality set in. That same night the lead stories were heart breakers. A local family lost two of their youngest daughters due to a tragic poisoning accident. 500 local school employees were going to be laid off due to budget issues. This was the real news! This was real life! Here I was nearly tortured by what to wear, what to say, how to hold my head to hide my double chin…And in the end I was again reminded that more important things are indeed more worthy of worry and attention!

So true to form in the end I’m a realist! As fun as it was to talk about blogging and cross my fingers for exposure and my 2 minutes of fame, I was humbled by the reminders that life is happening all around us! It put a lot into perspective for me! I love my blog! I love working hard and pouring myself into it! I love all of you who read it and send me such kind words of thanks! Honestly I LOVE it! But in the end there are so many more things in life worth celebrating and honoring and getting all worked up over!

Sorry for the small rant! Life lessons while blogging right! Thanks again for being so incredible! You will all never know how much you touch my life by simply coming to check in on my crazy adventures in creating! I’m so incredibly blessed to be connected to a community that includes all of you!!!

Thanks for listening!

Headbands! Headbands! Headbands! Get organized already!

Ok… so Forever21 pretty much rocks my Headband world! It’s my first go to place for fun accessories especially Headbands! I can’t even recreate some of these babies for cheaper! I have a Forever21 near by but I have to let you in a little secret! Their online selection kicks it’s in store selections butt!!!! You have to check them out on line!

I’ve become a headband hoarder and thanks to Forever21 it’s not a budget busting habbit! Here are some of my latest finds that I just had to add to my collection..

This little guy was only $3.80! Comes in Black, Gray and A Pearly Cream!

This is a new favorite! Can you believe it was only $2.50!!! GET OUT!!! I can’t make it for that price! So of course I got it in like 4 colors!
And a classic sweet bow number for a jaw dropping $1.50! Come on people!!! Comes in more colors so I grabbed me a handful!

For reals Forever!!! You rock! Thanks to the mass production line in China I’m guessing for bargain basement prices!

So now that your headband collection is growing how on earth do you keep them from breaking and keep them cleverly organized? ( There has been a few casualties in this house! Tears were shed and a promise was made that no longer would my hair accessories be put in danger!)

This Hangy thing-a-ma-jig from IKEA is the perfect solution!!! I was looking for a scarf holder but found this to do the trick even better!

Happily my headbands hang out and are kept out of harms way! It hangs in my closet and is easy to see all my choices! I LOVE her!!!!!

A $7 solution that will keep my collection organized and in reach!
Happy Headband shopping!

Halter Top Revamp!

Time for another Revamp! Probably my most favorite thing to do! I take something that is perfectly wonderful and turn it into something even more perfectly wonderful!

This time I’ll be using this American Eagle Halter Top, adult size medium, that I picked up at my favorite Clearance Center “DowenEast Clearance!” It was $2.50 and in great shape!

First I cut the top off to even it out!

Then I cut it’s halter straps to use as straps for the new dress.

Next I turned the shirt inside out and stitched two new lines down the sides to create the size I needed to fit my little model! After you stitch the new seams trim off the excess fabric that you no longer need!

Pin down a new hem on the top of the dress and pin your straps on the front and back of the dress. I used a zig zag stitch to add a little detail!

I repeated the zig zag at the bottom of the dress to tie it all together!

Badda bing! Badda bang!Ten minutes later you have a brand new dress!
And all for $2.50! Gotta Love it!

**** Try taking photos of the busiest 2 year old on earth! Yikes! Wish I had better pics but alas…toddlers would rather play with a Zhu Zhu pet then strike a pose!

Headbands love Ruffles too you know!

If I can’t wear Jewelry like the best of them I’ll kick it up a notch with a fun headband most of the time! It makes me feel current, together and like I’m putting in the effort to complete a look! So what if I’m 30 years old and have a baby snot snail trial on my shoulder! At least my head looks good right!?

Headbands aren’t just for Grammar School girls! Mom’s can get away with them too!

Have a go at this super easy and versatile Ruffled Headband!

What you’ll need:

  • Two 20″ cut pieces of 1 1/2″ Grosgrain Ribbon
  • Straight Pins
  • Headband
  • Sewing Machine
  • Hot Glue gun and Glue

It’s simple really! Just start gathering your ribbon and making pleats being sure to pin them in place as you go!

This is how it will look when it’s been Ruffled or Pleated! Burn the edges of the ribbon with a lighter to prevent fraying.

Sew a straight stitch directly down the center!

Repeat the same thing on your second piece of ribbon but this time sew a straight stitch down the edge and not the center!

Using your Glue Gun glue the ruffled ribbon that has been sewn on the edge onto your headband. Glue it’s sewn edge down. You will want it to cascade down the side.

And lastly glue on your other ruffled piece layering it on top of the first! Glue its center down.

I love keeping it versatile! This simple design allows you to add to it. I pin on broaches that can easily be changes to match any outfit!

Can you believe I scored those beautiful Broaches for $1.99 each!!! DownEast Clearance Center comes through again! They had a huge selection of Ann Taylor and JCrew accessories all for just $1.99! They all retailed originally for$25-$40 !I bought up a huge collection and when I made this headband I knew they would be the perfect little touch!

Freaky Friday: "Tatertots and Jello"

Welcome to Freaky Friday! We have the privilege of spending a little time with the amazing Jen from over at Tatertots and Jello! Big big fan! So sit back and relax as we dive into her world of fun!

Wow – I’m so excited and honored to be here at Becca’s AMAZING blog! Hi — I’m Jen from tatertots & jello.

I’m a mom of four who loves creating and trying out new things. I created tatertots and jello as a place to let out some of my creative energy and meet new friends!
Some of my loves are making bright and happy wreaths and door hangings…

and perusing the Dollar Store for things to remake!

And speaking of the Dollar Store,

I have a simple Dollar Store project to share with you!
With Valentine’s Day just around the corner,
this is a 10-minute, $2 Project to brighten up your table.

Easy Peasy!

I found these candles and square vases at Dollar Tree. I like the simple, square shape.

First I cut a strip of paper that was just a little taller than the candle. Then I took my scalloped punch and cut out a border at the top. I attached the paper to the candle with my trusty glue gun.

Then I cut out a heart out of white paper and traced the heart on the left over scraps of the patterned paper.

I used some glitter to sparkle up the edges. And I also put some ribbon on one of the vases. I dropped a few little heart candies in the bottom and I was done. If you have a Cricut or some lettering stickers, you can spell out something on your candle — like LOVE or XOXO. Couldn’t be simpler!

Thanks Becca — for letting me come visit your wonderful world!

I love it here!

Come by and say hi – I would love to meet you all.

And we love having you here Jen!!!! Thanks for the amazing inspiration!
