"D"

Giant 2 foot Paper Mached Letter “D”: $8

Painting Supply’s: $4

Always knowing what letter your last name starts with: PRICELESS

I’m lovin’ how my giant “D” turned out! I rested my “D” on my kitchen window to dry but fell in love with how it looked there so there she sits! Perched on my sill proud and confident in her own abilities to represent the family well!

“Miss. D” was a fun project! I always love a distressed finish. They are a work in progress up ’till the very end! Add a little more here! Cover up a little too much there! It’s not until I see it the next day that I’ll know if I like how it turned out!

So if you are up for a little experimentation and self declaration I say get goin’ on a faux finish!

I snagged my Huge Monogram “D” from JoAnn’s! Sadly I left my 40% off coupon at home! Shucks! I painted a burnt shade of Orange that I self mixed and let ‘er dry.

Next step was to sand off the edged to expose the raw paper once again.

I then mixed a small quarter sized amount of brown paint with a few teaspoons of water to get a diluted brown that would be easy to wipe up. Paint in on all the edges…

and wipe off the excess wet paint. This leaves behind a beautiful aged edge. You can easily stop there and enjoy your new aged look! But you know me… the faux finishing must go on!

I went into my arsenal of weapons and put to work my Distressing Ink and metallic paint. I dry brushed on the Metallic paint and then Inked away. This was the fun part! It all added depth and character!

And there she is! Sittin’ pretty!

    Hi Becca,
I love the big "D" and it looks wonderful all distressed. I think
I might need a big letter like that so I won't forget my last name!
I have been working on projects before and just casually leave them in a certain spot to dry or whatever, and often they end up staying there, cool ugh?

great easy diy project that i might actualy have time for! Love the kitchen window! Have wood blinds that really get in the way of decorating my window seal but I love this look. It just freaks me out at night when a dark window is there when i'm watching dishes. afraid someone might be staring back at me that i can't see!! lol.

Wow love that! I have never seen one of those letters that big before! At first glance, I thought it was distressed wood! You did a fab job :)

That looks really good! I've been dying to try some distressing on a dresser that I have, but I'm scared I'm going to mess it up! Your "D" adds a nice pop of color in your kitchen!

That in a ginormous "D" I love the orange you used. It is fun to use a color out the norm. Looks purdy sitting on your sill.

  18. 18

How can all of that pretty creativeness reside all in just one person? Honestly, if I had a quarter of your "juice", I'd be so happy!

Did you do your cabinets yourself? They are wonderful…very character filled.

Becca @ Blue Cricket Design says:

    Heather,

Nope! The Cabinets were the first thing i fell in love with in this house. they were so me! A total risk on the sellers part to paint them such an odd color but they totally sold the house for me! Two years and some change later I'm ready for a change! But that's my nature! I have to mix it up often or get stir crazy! I think we'll be painting them this Spring and I'll be doing it this time!

Just found you from Little Birdie Secrets and so glad I did- LOVE your site and can't wait to search all through it :)

We have a "D" on our mantel for our last name. This past Saturday my 7 year old had a friend over who asked us did "D" stand for 'daddy' or 'donkey'…to which my hubby said they are pretty much one in the same, so take your pick! lol

    Anyway, it looks great!

  27. 27

    It's so great!

    Becca,

    I want black, distressed cabinets.

    My husband thinks I'm insane.

    I'm pretty sure I am.

But not because of the black cabinets.

Of course I an assume we'll get to watch you do your cabinets, right? And by watch, I mean live web-cam feed.

  33. 33

What a fantastic job painting and distressing it–it looks like good rust!

  34. 34

Well, this here comment box works JUUUUST fine.

I can only assume that if a comment box wasn't working, it can only be User Error.

Thankfully, the fine for User Error is a penalty of posting a super cool blog post about something super creative and inspiring. And if it borders on creating envy, all the better. We don't hate the envy creator. Never.

We just pass around the Oreos.

    2 for me….1 for you…

  35. 35

I love this so much I went straight to Joanns and made one for myself and its sitting behind the sink too!!!

    Thanks!!

  36. 36

Becca, that looks fabulous! I love those huge letters from Joann's, and have an awesome "B" on my mantel. It's black, though, and I'm thinking a more colorful and distressed finish would be better now! :)

  41. 41

So there I was doing a little blog-stalking and all of a sudden my husband saw your picture and he said – "Hey I know that girl, she's married to the newspaper guy." You must know the story about how your husband's freshman dorm room @ BYU was filled from floor to ceiling with shreds of newspaper by his lunatic friends. Yes – that bit of immaturity was carried out by none other than my husband (Robbie G.) and a few co-conspirators. Can you see why I married him?

  45. 45

Yes my son does look exactly like his father. Too bad I did all the work and didn't get any credit :-)…

Robbie was really excited when he saw your blog and said it had been way too long since he's seen you or any of your family. I knew your father-in-law at the singles ward and just by knowing him I can tell you have a great family.

  46. 46

OK I LOVE this! I actually bought 2 of those same big letters for my office, and I have done NOTHING with them, because it didn't want to just mod podge some paper on!! Thanks!! I think I know what I'm going to do with them now!

  52. 52

Man, I had one of these I was in the process of "dressing up" for decor…and then my 3 yo got a hold of it and broke it in half (ours was an L). Mr. Destructo has a knack for that lately. *sigh*

Just visited your site for the first time. I have been wanting to put something by my boring kitchen window, but couldn't decide what to put. I have also always wanted one for those giant letters in my home, but couldn't think of how to display it. I am going to make one this weekend. I'm just waiting for the President's Day weekend sale. Thanks for the great idea. BTW, I also went to BYU.
