Growth Chart

I love discovering a new way to use an otherwise useless item…

While rummaging my favorite section of IKEA, the “As Is” Section, I once again found myself staring at the obis of stranded pieces of wood, doors and shelves. Every time I see this corner I ask myself ” Who on earth buys this crap?”

I answered my own question when I sifted through the piles and found these babies…

Lovely forgotten cabinet doors, perfectly framed out scraps of otherwise useless wood. The wheels started turning!!! B-I-N-G-O!! Theses would make the perfect backdrops for Vinyl Projects!!! Priced from $1.99-2.99 they were affordable! Their potential was endless.

You could paint out a middle with Chalk Board paint and make your very own Message Board like the one hanging on my front Porch! Or you could paint the entire thing and paint your Monogrammed initials onto one and rest it on your mantel.

Or if your lucky and you come across a tall cabinet door for only $4.99 you can create the best looking Growth Chart ever!

Slap on a little paint, a little glaze and a little vinyl and there you have it! I love the way these Growth charts look because of the molding! The added detail adds so much and it’s much cheaper then buying a piece of lumber from the hardware store that you have to cut and sand! For reals people… Perfect size, perfect price, perfect! perfect! perfect!!!!

And it moves with you if you ever ditch your house for a new one!!! No more saying goodbye to the cherished growth markings left on your laundry room wall!

So if you have an IKEA near you, dive into that “As Is” section and see what you come up with!!!

*** I get all my vinyl from Cute Stephanie over at Somewhat Simple. Shoot her an email if you need any vinyl cut. Looks like she has a fun giveaway going on now! You could win a similar Growth chart design and other cool Vinyl!!

Cart Caddy:TUTORIAL

This was born out of absolute frustration and Insanity prevention ! Last week while shopping, I was so fed up with losing my coupons, having to pry the slobbery remains of a coupon out of my baby’s mouth and simply not having enough hands while I shop! My shopping
excursions are a mess!!!! If you were ever to see me shopping with three kids in tow you’d most likely find two out of three of ‘em crying and the other covered in chocolate chip bribery!

Well…Problem solved!!!!
(at least the coupon part of my problem! Let me know if you have a wonder
solution for the kid melt downs!)

I came home to create this Coupon Catch all for my Shopping cart!
It has two pockets! One to hold my Coupon Organizer and one to store the coupons I will be redeeming! And if you’re not a coupon shopper it’s the perfect little helper to hold
your bottled water, emergency candy bar you opened 15 min. into your visit and cell phone while you graze aisle after aisle!

Let’s dive in….

Here is what you’ll need…

Two complimentary pieces of Fabric. I used FAT QUARTERS.
Stiff interfacing
Coordinating Double Folded Bias Tape
Pins or stapler
Ruler

STEP ONE: Measure and cut your fabric and Interfacing 18″ x 18″

I found that by stacking them and then cutting them made the process faster and easier. Lay it out just how it will be sewn….a fabric with RIGHT side facing down, then interfacing, then fabric with RIGHT side facing up.

STEP TWO: Now we will be cutting out a section of your 18″ square to create the Caddy straps. Using a ruler and pen mark off the following measurements and cut through all three layers creating straps that measure 7″ long x 3″ wide.

STEP THREE: Use straight pins to secure the three layers together. I prefer using a stapler . It lays flatter and the staples are easy to remove.

STEP FOUR: Adding the bias Tape.

You will first need to sew an 18″ strip of Bias tape to the bottom section of the caddy.

STEP FIVE: Fold the bottom section in half leaving about a 1 1/2″ gap. This is creating your pocket. be sure to be aware of the fabrics. You will determine what fabric shows most so chose wisely which way you fold. Secure with pins or staples.

STEP SIX: Now it’s time to add the Bias Tape around the edges. Start at a top of a strap in it’s middle. Pin it on if that will help you keep it straight. Sew it on using a straight stitch. Corners Can be pinned or stapled to help them line up right. The inside corners are tricky. Sew around it completely being sure to fold your tape at the very end so you don’t have a raw edge.

STEP SEVEN: Sew a straight stitch line in your pocket making a second section in your pocket. You can determine how big you want each section. Also you may want to add another stitched line to make a pen pocket.

STEP EIGHT: Lastly we will be adding Velcro.

Cut two 1 3/4″ strips of Velcro. Separate the pieces and sew them onto the straps. Sew one on the top of the strap and the other at the bottom of the strap where it meets the pocket section.

And that will do it!!!!

Your very own Cart Caddy ready to make your life that much easier!!!!!

As easy as this looks it takes about an hour to sew. The bias tape can be tricky. I must have bough a pack that was ironed weird becasue mine was hard to get it to keep straight.
Just take your time!

BEST Chicken marinade EVER!!!!!

My neighbor had us over for a BBQ and grilled the best chicken I had ever tasted! It was moist, flavorful and so tender! I had to have the recipe! It’s the only way I make Chicken these days! I was shocked to find out how simple it was!

One Cup Soy Sauce
One cup Vegetable Oil
And 1 1/2 cups Fresca Soda
That’s it!!! Mix all that together and pour it over your Chicken in a bowl and let it marinate over night or for 4 plus hours! You won’t be sorry! It’s super simple and super delish! Thanks Lesa for turning me onto BBQ Chicken! I usually shy away from it because it’s always dry! Not any more!

Revamp it!!!!! Adult Skirt turns into a Girly Dress!

Don’t you hate it when you hit a Clearance sale and all that’s left is Size XXS or XXL!!!!
What’s a girl to do!!!???!!!

Well think out side the empty rack and get creative!

While at my favorite Clearance Center DOWNEAST CLEARANCE CENTER I found two XL
Skirts! Ahh shucks!!! Not a single small size in sight! But just before I threw them back my mind started doing what it does best!!!

Could it be!?! Is there something adorable just waiting to be created!!!

DING! DING! DING!!!!!

PRESENTING:

Adult skirt revamped into this Adorable Little girls Dress!
(and could it be any easier!!!??)
PhotobucketPhotobucket

Let’s Check out the before!

Super cute Down East Basic Skirt but a titch too big for me to enjoy…or is it!!!??
(Check the bottom of this post to see how I even get a little love out of her!)

I picked up the last two skirts for $5 each! Not too bad huh!

Let’s get this party started….

Put the skirt on your little cutie and pin it where you plan to cut. Be sure to allow a little space for seam allowance and a little extra room if you want it to last more then one season.

ALSO: be sure to take advantage of the already existing zipper!! This skirt had it sewn in on one of the sides so I was sure to cut off the opposite side! If the skirt has the zipper in the back just center it on your model and pin both sides showing where you’ll cut!

To line up a perfectly angled cut to match the other side of the skirt, simply fold the skirt in half taking the zippered side and matching it up to your pin marking where you’ll cut!

Follow the edge of the folded skirt with your scissors! Now you have a perfect
angle to match the other side!!!

Save that fabric you just removed…It’s what we’ll be using for the straps!

Now take your skirt section and fold it with right sides in. Sew a straight stitch down the length of the skirt making it a tube.

Finish the raw edge with a surging stitch!
And just like that your dress is nearly done!!!

Now moving onto the straps!

Using the piece of fabric you cut off, Cut out two strips. You can cut them as thick as you’d like and as long as you need . Measure your models shoulders to get an idea of the length you need. Remember, longer is always better! You can adjust them later!

Straps are simple! Fold your cut strip in half long ways and straight stitch up the edge. Turn the tube inside out! Press with an iron and add straight stitches up both edges to finish
the look and reinforce the straps.

Your nearly done!!!!
Put the dress on your model and pin the straps onto the front and back!
Sew them on using a straingt stich. I start at one side of the zipper and sew all the way across making it look clean and finished!

And ther you have it!!!!

A darling little dress any girl would love!!!

AND YOU GUESSED IT!!!

I also revamped a headband!!! I used left over scraps, added a handmade fabric flower
and glued on a vintage button!!! The perfect “Frosting” to our newest little get up!!!

Photobucket

And look what else is “SEW” simple to do… take a large skirt in and enjoy it yourself!!!!

Photobucket
I told you it was easy!!!!!

Counting Down & a mini give away…

There is quite the exiting buzz over here in our house! 19 more days ’till Kindergarten starts and off my little Chicken goes (wipe a tear! Shout Hooray!!!) It’s all we can do to not camp out on the front porch and wait for the School Bus to pull up!

While we wait in agony why not put that anxious energy to work! I love little hands at work!

Count down chains are the best! I remember making them in high school to count down till Christmas breaks or in College to count down ’till the next time I was going to drive 4 hours to see my boyfriend! Everyone loves a good count down chain! Even grown ups. But for an over excited Kindergartner it’s just what she needs to see how much longer ’till the
biggest “First day” EVER!!!

Slowly but surely this beautifully colored chain will lose it’s rings as it inches it’s way closer to August 26th! I have mixed emotions about all this!!! I’ve grown quite found to the little
darling who crafted it so well. She see’s it as a reminder of when her journey starts… I see
it as a reminder of how few days I have left to be her biggest protector and mother hen.
I know!! I know!!!!

On a happier note…

here’s a little

Junk food Sushi

With school buses and teachers just about ready to welcome little one back to school, it’s important to soak up all the Summer fun while we still can!

My girls love to be in the thick of all I do. Be it cleaning or gardening, I can always count on having little shadows and helpers at my side! I love doing things geared towards their imagination and abilities! This is the PERFECT recipe for any young helper!

Photobucket

Junk Food Sushi is a concoction of all things kids love…

Photobucket

Twinkies! Fruit Roll Ups!! Candy!!!

Photobucket

I love the color of these Green Apple Fruit roll ups!!! They look as close to Seaweed
as you could get!!

Unroll the fruit roll up and using a pizza cutter slice it in 6 strips.

Photobucket

Now you will slice each Twinkie into three equal parts. Wrap a slice of the Fruit roll up
around each piece of Twinkie leaving the cream filling sides exposed.

Photobucket

Now comes the fun part! Add your favorite small candies! I always add a Swedish Fish!! It is “Sushi” right!!!! We also added sour Gummie Worms that I cut in half and Tropical Flavored Skittles! Other candies to consider using are Red Hots, Licorice Pieces,
Mike ‘n Ikes and Jelly Beans! Anything small and colorful!

And VOILA!!! A super yummy tasty treat!
(I personally hate Twinkies and the taste of these but I’m a mom!!)
Kids LOVE ‘em and why wouldn’t they! Sugar!Candy! Junk Food!!!!

Hooray!!!!!!
